Amazing Roads You Won't Believe Will Ever End
7. The Golden Quadrilateral
With over a billion people, India needs its big cities to stay well-connected and that's exactly why they built a massive loop connecting Mumbai to Bangalore before heading on to Calcutta and New Delhi - and then back again. Completed in 2013, the Golden Quadrilateral is maybe not the most stunning route on the list but it does take in some pretty awesome sights! As you pass Delhi, you might even spot the Lotus Temple or the Taj Mahal…
6. The Trans-Canada Highway
This road is so long that if you ran it across the Atlantic Ocean you would end up in France! But traveling along where it actually is is an stunning drive too. Snow-capped mountains, endless forests, crystal clear lakes and all sort of animals. On the way, you'll be able to take in Canada's great cities including Halifax, Quebec, Montreal and of course Vancouver. A truly unforgettable trip.
5. Europe's Route 40.
Europe is a pretty well-connected place, which has had multiple roads for thousands of years thanks to the Romans. And sure enough, the E40 wasn't built from scratch but rather connects multiple existing highways into one long transcontinental. So, what can you see if you get into your car and tackle the 8000 kilometer challenge? Well the route starts in Calais, France and runs through Brussels, Krakow, Volgograd before heading off to Tashkent (via the Aral Sea) and ending at the border of China. Much of the route is stunning, ranging from the canals of Brugge, to the lakes of Kazakhstan and the dry steppe of the 'Stans'. This journey is not only unforgettable, it becomes something you find you are thinking about when you wake up!
4. The Trans-Siberian Highway
This might be the most stunning of all the routes on the list. Starting from the lakes and forests of the Baltics it soon heads off through the Ural mountains to the famous Siberian tundra, and on all the way to the Sea of Japan, 11 000 kilometers away. Some of the cities on the route are great too: Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan and Irkutsk - the Paris of Siberia as it is dubbed. And let's not forget Lake Baikal. The deepest lake in the world is source of much of the world's fresh water. You would not believe one lake could contain so much water!
3. The Asian Highway
If you are traveling from Iran to Singapore along the world's third longest road, you will enjoy a wide variety of landscapes from the high mountains of Iran and Pakistan to the bustling cities of New Delhi and Lahore, and then back to amazing mountainscapes when you enter Nepal – finally finishing with the gentle tea tree covered hills of Assam and the silver beaches of Thailand. officially, the road also continues within Indonesia but since the Malacca Strait bridge has not actually been built yet we don't think it should count.
2. Highway 1
Driving around a massive country like Australia is about way more than just getting from one settlement to the next because you can see from your car window the Great Dividing Range, the jungles of the tropics and of course, more than a fair share of scorching, outback terrain. But if you like to see kangaroos crossing the road, or koalas chewing Eucalyptus leaves in the trees, then Highway 1 is the prefect road trip for you.
1. The Pan-American Highway
It is hard to define what exactly makes the Pan-American Highway so magic, but part of it is surely because this 30 000 kilometer road is cut in two by the hundred kilometer long Darian Gap - lush jungle inhabited by indigenous people and a very dangerous to get lost in too. This makes the road not only beautiful and exciting, but to feel like traveling from one world to another. What will you see as you drive along? Well, there's the rugged mountains of Alaska and the dry American West; the lush jungles of Central America and the deserts of Chile's Atacama - not to forget the glaciers of Tierra del Fuego. On the way, you will also cross great cities like Denver, Mexico City, Cali, Valparaiso and finally the southern most city of the world, Ushuaia. Not to forget Valparaiso, home to the Nobel Prize winning writer, Pablo Neruda, who once wrote: "If we walk up and down Valparaiso's stairs we will have made a trip around the world."
